命への感謝！自然を守ろう！

 皆さんはハワイ特有の植物をどのくらいご存知ですか？　フラをやっている方ならメレでよく歌われるお花の名前、キルトをやっている方ならパターンでよく使われる樹木や花の名前をご存知だと思います。

How many Hawaiian plants do you know ? If you are a hula dancer, you may know the names of flowers that are often sung in Mele, and if you are a Hawaiian quilter, you may know the names of trees and flowers that are often used in patterns.

そんな中でもハワイ島の島花でもあるオヒアはそれにまつわる伝説と共によく知られていると思います。

Among them, Ohia, which is also an island flower of the Big Island, is well known along with the legends related to it.

残念なことに、今このオヒアのダメージが広がっていて、ハワイでは保護活動をしています。先日そのミーティングに参加しました。

ほんの数年で青々と茂っていたオヒアの木々がとても早く枯れていっているのです。急速に広がっている被害の原因は真菌性疾患によるものです。なので人間がオヒアの森に入るときには衣類や靴の厳重な消毒、侵入する車も入念な洗浄を呼びかけています。

オヒアは鉢植えにして日本にも持ち込まれていると聞きました。そうやって人間が森に侵入し傷つけたりすることで病気は感染し、それは森に拡大していくことになるのです。

Unfortunately, the damage to this ohia is widespread now, and Hawaiian people are working to protect it in Hawaii. I attended one of the meeting the other day.

The lush Ohia trees are dying very quickly in just a few years. The cause of the rapidly spreading damage is due to fungal diseases. Therefore, before humans enter the Ohia Forest, they call for strict disinfection of clothes and shoes, and careful cleaning of invading cars.

I heard that Ohia is planted in pots and brought to Japan. When humans invade and hurt the forest , the disease is transmitted and spreads to the forest.

ミーティングの後半では、参加者全員でレイメーキングをしました。草花を使って作られるレイもまた生き物の命を使っています。ハワイアンは自然からお花をもらう時は祈りを捧げ、必要な数しか受け取りません。もしあなたがハワイアンの祈りができなくても、きちんと心の中でその美しさを受け取ることに感謝の気持ちを持つことが大切です。

参加者はそれぞれが用意した材料でレイメーキングをしたのですが、私が作ったレイはこれです。

In the second half of the meeting, all the participants made a lei. Lei made from flowers also use the lives of living things. Hawaiians pray when they receive flowers from nature and receive only as many as they need. Even if you can't pray Hawaiian style, no problem, it's important to be grateful to receive the beauty of nature.

Participants prepared their own materials, and this is the lei  I made at that day.

これはキッチンペーパーで作りました。どんなものでも工夫すれば思いも寄らない素晴らしいものができる、と主催者にも賛同してもらいました。

This was made from kitchen paper towel. The organizers agreed that if you devise anything, you can make something unexpected and wonderful.

しかし紙も元は樹木。生活の中にあるものは本当に命が溢れています。

人は生まれながらにして罪人だという教えもあります。私は宗教家ではありませんが、常に自分の周りにある命（それは衣食住に必要なもの、そしてまさに命を持っている周りの人々、家族や友人、ペットなども含め）に支えられ助けられ自分の命を継続しているのだということを忘れてはいけないと思います。

休むことなく働いている自分の体も含め、全ての命への感謝を忘れないようにしましょう。

The paper is also originally a tree. What is in our life is really full of life.

There is also the teaching that people are born sinners. I'm not a religionist, but we're always supported and helped by the lives around us ( food, clothing, and shelter, and the people, like family, friends, also pets, etc. ). I think we must not forget that's why we can be continuing our lives.

I would like to thank all lives around me, including my body, which works without rest.
