ビッグアイランド Big Island

ハワイのビッグアイランドに行って来ました。色々思い出の多いこの島を訪れるのは随分久しぶりです。

Mana went to Big Island, HI. She has a lot of memories in this island.




真っ先に向かったのはマウナケアビーチホテル。５０周年目を迎えたばかりのこのホテルは、オープン時にロックフェラー氏がメアリーカラマさんに依頼した２９枚のベッドスプレッドサイズのキルトが飾られていることでもよく知られています。

At the first, Mana visited Mauna Kea Beach Hotel that opened in July 1965 by Laurence S. Rockefeller. 29 pieces of Hawaiian Quilts are displayed here. At the time of opening, Rockefeller ordered quilts to Mary Kalama, and Mary and friends were completed during a half year.




ビーチから吹く風、波の音、その空気の中にあるハワイアンキルト。その調和がとても自然で、至極あたりまえのことですが、ハワイアンキルトはやはりハワイの文化なのだと感じます。

The wind from beach, the sound of wave, there are quilts in the air. The combination is natural and peaceful. It's a matter of course, Hawaiian quilt is Hawaiian culture.



いつも旅行に持って行く新しいキルト。今回のお供は海モチーフ。実は３年ぐらい前から作りたかった色合わせなのですが、海のブルー、火山の赤とビッグアイアランドのイメージにぴったりでした。

Mana always brings new quilt in her vacation. These colors are perfect much for the image of Big island.




海沿いの木陰で針を進めるのは至福の時間です。

It was a happiest time to sew under the palm tree.



帰路に着くまでにアップリケを終えることができたので、波の音を思い出しながらキルトを楽しむことにします。

Mana finished the appliqué before arriving at the way home, shall I start quilting while remembering the sound of Hawaiian ocean.
