さあヒイアカの旅が始まります。。。。
彼らがパナエヴァの森に近づくと、突然豚の鳴き声がしました。。
ヒイアカは緑に身を包んだ美しい少女に出会いました。ワヒネオマオというその少女は、尊敬の証としてヒイアカの前にひれ伏しました。
少女はヒイアカをペレと間違え子豚を献上し、お願いをしようとしたのですが、ヒイアカはそれは勘違いだと言いました。
ワヒネオマオは今結婚しようとしており、両親からペレに捧げ物をするようにアドバイスされたのだと言いました。ヒイアカはその魔法の力で、ペレがその捧げ物の子豚を受け取れるようにしてあげました。そしてワヒネオマオは、ヒイアカとパウオパラアの旅に付いて行くことにしました。
As Hi’iaka and
her companion, Pā'ūopala'ā,
readied themselves for the trip, they paused at the plateau of Wahinakapu where
Hi’iaka, with her power of
far-seeing, became aware that Lohi’au
was dead. Pele scoffed at that idea and sent them on their way.
As they neared the forest of Pana’ewa they suddenly heard the squealing of a pig.
Hi’iaka saw a
beautiful girl dressed in green. The girl, named Wahine'ōma'o, had prostrated
herself before Hi’iaka as a sign
of respect.
She offered the piglet to Hi’iaka, whom she mistook for Pele, and was about to make a request
when Hi’iaka corrected her.
Wahine'ōma'o explained that she was about to be married and was advised by her parents to
first make an offering to Pele.
Hi’iaka, with her magical powers, arranged for Pele to receive
the piglet, and Wahine'ōma'o then joined Hi’iaka and Pā'ūopala'ā on their journey
to fetch Lohi’au.

翌朝早く、3人は森の小道に沿って進んでいました。真紅のレフアが咲き乱れる中、村の宴のために花を集めている女の子達がいました。
そのリーダーであるパプレフは、すぐにヒイアカと友達になりました。彼女はヒイアカにレイを贈り、３人を村に来て祭りに参加するように誘いました。
山のようなごちそうが並べられヒイアカは丁重にもてなされました。しかし、ヒイアカにはちょっと気になることがありました。パプレフは身分の高い家柄であったにもかかわらず礼儀正しい社会的なマナーを身につけていませんでした。彼女はとてもだらしない食べ方で食べ物を散らかしました。
この振る舞いはペレから授かった神聖な防御力を失うことになるのですが、パプレフはヒイアカの一行に加わりました。彼らはプナを通り、ハアエナ近くの海岸線を通り過ぎ、ヒロに向かって進んで行きました。
Early the next morning, the three girls were making their
way along a forest trail. There amidst the crimson lehua flowers was group of
girls gathering blossoms for a feast about to take place in their village.
Pāpūlehu, leader of the flower gathering girls, immediately
befriended Hi'iaka. She presented Hi'iaka with a lei and invited the trio to come
to the village and join in the festivities.
As the abundant food was laid out Hi'iaka was seated in the
place of hounor. However, Hi'iaka noticed something at the feast. The girl, Pāpūlehu although from an important family, had not acquired the good manners
of polite society. She ate carelessly and scattered scraps of food about in a
slovenly manner. Though this conduct deprived her of the divine protection Pele
had given the other girls, Pāpūlehu decided to join Hi'iaka's troup. They
continued through Puna, past the coastline near Hā'ena and onward toward Hilo.

パプレフは、彼女たちが通っていた地域を熟知していたので、ヒイアカには別のルートを使うことを強く勧めました。森の中の小道は危険に満ちていたからです。そこは恐ろしいモオパナエヴァの家だったのです。爬虫類の怪獣は必ずや攻撃してくるはずです。
しかしながらヒイアカは危険でも最短のルートをたどることを固く決めていました。そして、トラブルが始まるまでそう長くはかかりませんでした。
ごく普通の木の切り株、変形した根、低木の茂みや苔むす石に姿を隠し、鱗だらけの、ずる賢いモオパナエヴァ、そしてその群れがあらゆる方向から彼女たちを攻撃しました。
ヒイアカはすべての力と強さを駆使して、モオの爪と牙の激しい攻撃に立ち向かい、戦いの血にまみれながらもどうにか耐えていました、しかし、その争いはパプレフには耐え難いものでした。神の力と防御なくしては、恐ろしいモオによってすぐに食べられてしまいました。
Being familiar with the area they were travelling through, Pāpūlehu strongly urged Hi’iaka to take another route. The trail through the
forest was full of danger. It was the home of the dreaded mo'o Pana'ewa, a
reptilian beast that would surely attack them.
Hi'iaka, however, was determined to take the shorter, more
dangerous route. And it wasn't long before the trouble began.
Disguised as simple tree stumps, deformed roots, clumps of deceitful
mo'o Pana'ewa and its legions attacked the girls from all directions. Hi'iaka,
using all her powers and strength, lashed out against the claws and fangs of
the mo'o. Smeared with blood from the battle, she held her own, but the
struggle did not go as well for Pāpūlehu Without divine powers and protection,
the girl was quickly consumed by the dreaded mo'o.

ヒイアカの一行が通った大体の場所です。PunaのあたりからHaenaの海沿いを通ってPanaewaの森へと入っていきます。さて、ヒイアカ達はモオとの戦いに勝つことができるのでしょうか。。。
