ペレとヒイアカ ②

 

昨日に引き続きペレの話です。

ペレが見物していた大勢の群衆に大胆に歩み寄ると、人々はその赤いドレスを纏った、美しい神秘的な女性に道をあけました。ペレがそこを通り音の鳴り響く方へ歩いて行くのを群衆はチラチラと横目で見、ひそひそと声をかわしました。

　
そのパフォーマー達の真ん中に、ロヒアウというハンサムな若い首長が女性の姿をした二人のトカゲをそばに侍らせて座っていました。

　
ペレが近づいて行くと大勢の群衆のざわめきが静まり返りました。ロヒアウはペレと目が会った瞬間、彼女のパワーと活気にすぐに魅了されました。ロヒアウはペレを彼の側に座るように誘い、二人が社交上の挨拶と礼儀を交わすと、また踊りが始まり、ご馳走がふるまわれ出しました。

　
パフォーマンスの後、ロヒアウはペレを自宅に招き入れました。そして3日間共に過ごした後、今度は彼女が彼にハワイ島のプナに泊まりに来て欲しいと誘いました。ペレはロヒアウのために泊まる場所を用意し、ハワイ島までエスコートする女性のガイドも送ると約束しました。ロヒアウがそれに同意するとペレは彼の目の前から忽然と姿を消しました。

Pele strode boldly into the assembled onlookers. The crowd parted for the beautiful and mysterious woman in red. Side glances and whispers were exchanged as Pele made her way toward the source of music.
There, in the midst of other performers, sat the handsome young chief named Lohi'au, as two mo'o women in human form flirted with him. The whole company fell silent at Pepe's approach. When Lohi'au and Pepe's eyes met, he was captivated by her intensity and vibrancy. Lohi'au invited Pele to sit at his side. The dancing and feasting continued as the pair exchanged greetings and courtesies as was customary.
After the performance, Lohi'au invited Pele to come with him and share in the hospitality of his home. After three days, she proposed to him that he come to stay with her in Puna on the island of Hawaii. She would prepare a place for him and send a woman to escort him on the journey. He agreed to come, and Pele, inner spirit form, disappeared before his very eyes.

ロヒアウは茫然とし、そのすべては夢だったのではないかと思いました。あのペレがいなくなってしまったのです。ロヒアウは家の外もよく探しましたが、彼女はどこにもいませんでした。ロヒアウの魂はペレと共に連れ去られ、彼は失意のどん底に落ち、いっさい家から出てこなくなりました。

　
ついに、ロヒアウの妹のカフアヌイと、親友のパオア率いる数人の友人達は、思い切って彼の家に入りました。数日間、ロヒアウは誰にも会いませんでした。

悲しいことに、彼らはロヒアウが死んでいるのを発見しました。そこには彼の忠実な飼い犬だけが生き絶えた主人の横に座っていました。

　
パオアは怒りに体を震わせ、自分の衣を引きはがすと、友人の死への復讐、伝統的なハワイアンの喪に服すことができるまで二度と衣類を身につけないと誓いました。彼はペレを追い詰め、彼女にロヒアウの死とその屈辱の代償を払わせることを誓ったのです。

　
悲嘆にくれたロヒアウの村人達は、墓地を見守る忠実な犬と一緒に彼の体を優しく埋葬しました。

Lohi'au was in a daze. He wondered whether he had dreamed it all. The woman, Pele, was gone. He searched outside the house as well, but she wasn't there either. And gone with her was his spirit. He sank into a deep depression and would not come out of his house.
Eventually Lohi'au 's sister, Kahuanui, and some friends, led by Lohi'au's closest companion, Paoa, dared to enter his house. Loji'au had not been seen for days.
To their shock, they found Lohi'au dead in his home. Only his trusty dog, ever by his side, dat there by his master's lifeless body.
Paoa flew into a rage. He tore off his Malo and swore an oath never to clothe himself again until he had avenged his friend' death, a traditional Hawaiian custom of mourning. He swore to hunt down Pele an make her pay for Lohi'au 's death and humiliation.
Lohi'au 's grief- stricken people tenderly lay his body to rest, with his faithful dog standing guard at the burial site.
