ペレとヒイアカ ①

フラをやっている人なら、音楽やフラの中に一度はその名前を聞いたことがあるPele とHi'iakaikapoliopele。この二人の姉妹の話が書かれている「A tale of two sisters」by Dietrich Varezを訳しながら少しづつ紹介します。

ハワイの火山 の女神ペレは、姉のナマカオカハイの怒りをかい、故郷カヒキから追放されました。 ナマカオカハイはペレの炎の脅威に対して怒りをあらわにした海の女神です。 ペレは航海に適した二艇式のカヌー”ホヌアイケア”を準備し、ハワイに向かうためにカヒキを出発しました。 彼女の航海には、サメの神である兄やこの話のヒロインとなる妹のヒイアカイカポリオペレを含む多くの親戚が同行しました。

　
まずハワイの最北西部に到着したペレは、モクパパパのサンゴ礁とサンゴを最初に発見しました。 ニホア島を皮切りに、住むのに適した場所を見つけようと次々と島をめぐり調べていきました。 彼女は伝説の掘り棒パオアを使い、必要な火を掘り出し見つけようとしたのです。

しかし、彼女がハワイ最大の島であるハワイ島に到着するまで、どこの島も彼女が求めている場所ではありませんでした。最後に辿り着いたキラウエアの高地で、ペレは求めていたものをやっと見つけることができたのです。 そして、そこは彼女の家となりました。
この物語はペレがキラウエアの燃え盛る溶岩の穴に落ち着くところから始まります。

Pele, goddess of Hawaii 's volcanoes, was driven out of her homeland after a quarrel with her older sister Nāmakaokaha'i. Nāmaka was a sea goddess who resented Pepe's fiery nature.
Pele readied her great double hulled voyaging canoe Honuaiākea and left Kahiki enroute  to Hawaii. She was accompanied by a number of relatives, including a shark-god brother who navigated, and her youngest sister, Hi'iakaikapoliopele, the heroine of our story.
Arriving at the northwestern- most part of Hawaii, Pele first encountered the reefs and shoals of Mokupāpapa. Starting at Nihoa, she tested all the islands in turn to find a suitable place to settle. She dug with her legendary digging stick, pāoa, to find the fire she required.
None of the islands seems to suit her until she reached Hawaii, the largest island. There in the upland region of Kilauea, she found exactly what she longed for. This would be her home. Pele settled into the fiery lava pit of Kilauea, and our story begins there.

ペレのこの家は素晴らしい場所だ、と末っ子のヒイアカはすぐにハワイ島が好きになりました。一番のお気に入りは、いたるところに咲いている緋色のレフアの花とその花々の上を舞う赤い蜜を愛する鳥の群れでした。

ある日ペレは、プナのハエナにある海へ行って波を楽しんだり、貝を集めようと姉妹を誘いました。姉妹たちは皆賛成し海へ行きました。浜辺で、ヒイアカは姉妹を緋色のレフアで飾ったり、優雅にフラを踊り楽しみました。

ペレが溶岩板の涼しい日陰でしばらく休んでいると、いつの間にか眠りに落ち夢を見ました。パフのドラムの音が聞こえます、そしてその音色はとても魅力的でした。次の瞬間、彼女の魂は眠っている彼女の身体から離れ、その音楽に引き寄せられて行きました。音楽は彼女の魂をプナの海岸からどんどん引き離し、フラを踊っている大勢の人々が集まっていたカウアイ島まで連れて行きました。

A wonderful place this home Pele! Hi'iaka, the youngest sister, was immediately charmed by it. She especially loved the scarlet lehua blossoms that were everywhere, and the flurries of red, nectar loving birds that hovered over the clustered blossoms.
One day Pele suggested to her sisters that they visit the ocean at Hā'ena in Puna to enjoy the surf and gather shellfish. The sisters all agreed. At the beach, Hi'iaka decorated all her sisters with the scarlet lehua blossoms and then gracefully danced the hula for them.
Pele chose a cool, shady spot on slab of lava and fell asleep. As she slept a dream came over her. She heard the music of hula Oahu drums calling out to her. It was irresistible. In her spirit form, she rose from her physical sleeping body and went in pursuit of the music.
The music drew her away from the seashore at Puna and eventually brought her to the island of Kauai , where a crowd was gathered at a hula performance.
